Is LANDR Mastering Good? An Honest Listen

Know the controls before you judge the sound

At the time of writing (October 2026), LANDR’s help centre describes three styles — Warm, Balanced and Open — and three intensities, Lo, Med and Hi. Warm fills out thin or harsh mixes, Balanced is the default, and Open scoops the mid-range for a punchier, modern sound. Hi is for maximum loudness at the cost of dynamics.

That’s nine combinations, which is a sensible range without being overwhelming. LANDR also offers reference mastering and album mastering on its site. Most people who say LANDR “sounds bad” tried one combination, usually Hi, and stopped there.

Run the honest listen in this order

Upload your hardest mix and preview Balanced / Med first. Then Warm / Med and Open / Med. Only try Hi if the song is dance or hard-hitting hip-hop, and listen to the loudest chorus each time, not the intro.

Level-match every comparison. Hi will always sound more exciting for ten seconds because it’s louder; turn it down by ear until it matches Med, then listen to the snare’s front edge and whether the vocal stays forward in the chorus. Write down which combination won; the same choice usually suits your next mix too.

Know where it tends to fall short

LANDR does well on finished, balanced mixes. It struggles, as every automatic masterer does, with mixes that have a real problem: boomy low end, a buried vocal or a harsh top. Hi intensity on a busy mix is where you’ll most often hear crunch or pumping.

Its controls are also coarse compared with manual mastering. If Balanced is nearly right but a little bright, there’s no single tweak for “slightly less 5 kHz”. The fix is in the mix: dip it there, then master again.

For an EP, don’t judge a single track in isolation. Master the whole set with the same style and intensity and play the transitions: LANDR’s album mastering exists for exactly this, but you can hear the same problems yourself. See how to make an EP sound consistent for the listening order.

Price it by how often you release

LANDR lets you preview masters free and pay to download. At the time of writing its site offers single-track purchases (around $10 a track) and LANDR Studio subscriptions: all three tiers — Essentials, Standard and Pro — include unlimited MP3 mastering, with WAV and HD WAV on the higher tiers. Check LANDR’s pricing page for current numbers and trial terms.

If you release monthly and want distribution and plug-ins in the same bundle, the subscription can be good value. For one single, pay per track or use a free masterer. Our is LANDR worth it post runs the numbers.

Compare it with a free master before you pay
