How to Make an EP Sound Consistent When You Master It

Pick the anchor track and master it first

Choose the song that best represents the EP — usually the single — and master it until you love it. That master becomes the reference for everything else: its vocal level, its low end, its brightness. Every other decision is “closer to the anchor or further away”.

Don’t pick the loudest or most extreme track as the anchor. If the anchor is a slammed banger, the ballad will either be forced to the same loudness and sound squashed, or sit far quieter and feel like it came from a different record.

Use the same feel on every track, then break the rule once

Master each track free online with the same feel as the anchor. The same character across five songs does more for consistency than any amount of per-track tweaking. The default lands around −14 LUFS; of the eight feels, Punchy, Club and Cinematic are the ones built around a different loudness.

Break the rule only for a song that’s genuinely different: an acoustic closer might suit Cinematic (about −16 LUFS), a club track Club (about −10). One exception reads as intentional. Three reads as five singles stapled together.

Keep loudness within 1–2 LU, not identical

Streaming apps with album-mode normalisation keep the level differences between tracks on the same release, so the relative loudness you set is what listeners hear. Aim for the loud tracks within about 1 LU of each other and the quiet ones 2–4 LU below. Identical LUFS on a ballad and a banger makes the ballad sound louder than it should.

Check by ear, not by meter: play the last chorus of track one into the first verse of track two. If you reach for the volume knob, the levels are wrong. See mastering an album consistently for the longer-form version.

Match the vocal, then the low end, then the top

Play each master back to back with the anchor and listen only to the vocal. If one song’s vocal sits 2 dB further back, that’s the inconsistency people notice, even if the LUFS matches. Fix it in the mix — nudge the vocal fader 1–2 dB — and master again.

Then compare the bass on a small speaker, then the brightness on the hi-hats. A track that’s noticeably darker than the rest can take Crisp; one that’s brighter can take Warm. Change one thing per pass, and use the loudness-matched A/B so you’re hearing tone rather than level.

Listen through the EP in order before you ship

Put the masters in running order and listen start to finish on one system, then again on earbuds. Listen for three things: a jump in level between tracks, a change in the space around the vocal, and a gap or fade that feels wrong. Two seconds between tracks is a good default; trim the ends of each file so the gaps are yours, not accidental silence.

Anything that jumps out, fix in the mix and re-master that song for free; there’s no cap on re-masters. Building an EP from AI songs? Mastering multiple Suno songs for an EP covers the extra steps.

Frequently asked questions

Should every song on an EP be the same LUFS?

No. Keep the loud songs within about 1 LU of each other and let quieter songs sit 2-4 LU lower. Identical numbers make ballads sound too loud.

What LUFS should an EP be mastered to?

Around -14 LUFS for the loudest tracks suits streaming, with -10 to -11 for dense genres. The spread between tracks matters more than the exact number.

Should I master an EP one track at a time?

Yes, but against an anchor. Master your best-representing song first, then master the rest with the same feel and compare each back to back with it.

Why do my EP tracks sound different from each other?

Usually the vocal level or the low end changes between songs. Compare only the vocal first; a 1-2 dB difference is audible even when the loudness matches.

How long should the gap between EP tracks be?

About 2 seconds is a good default. Trim silence at the start and end of each file so gaps are deliberate.

Can I master an EP online for free?

Yes. Loopin Mastering is free with no sign-up; master each track with the same feel and use the loudness-matched A/B to compare.
