Is BandLab Mastering Free — and Is It Enough?

Know what free actually gets you

At the time of writing (October 2026), BandLab says its mastering is free for all users, with unlimited masters and downloads in both MP3 and WAV (BandLab Mastering). You need a BandLab account to use it. The free presets are Universal, Fire, Clarity and Tape, per BandLab’s membership page.

That’s a genuinely good free offer from a company with a huge user base, and its presets are well tuned. For demos, SoundCloud uploads and a lot of first releases, it’s enough.

Know what Membership adds before you upgrade

BandLab Membership adds four more presets — Natural, Cinematic, Spatial and Punch — and an intensity slider with 11 levels from Light to Heavy, per BandLab’s own announcement. Check BandLab’s site for current Membership prices; they vary by tier and region.

The intensity control is the upgrade that matters. On the free tier, each preset is applied at its standard strength. If Fire is almost right but slightly too hard, you can’t dial it back without paying. If you’re considering Membership only for mastering, try the free presets on three different songs first; if one of the four fits all three, you don’t need it.

Test the four free presets in this order

Start with Universal, which is the safe baseline. Then try Clarity if the vocal is buried, Tape if the mix sounds thin or harsh, and Fire only if it’s a hard-hitting track that can take more push. Listen to the loudest chorus on each, not the intro.

Level-match before you decide. The loudest preset wins every quick comparison, so turn the louder ones down by ear until they match Universal, then judge the snare, the vocal and the bass. If one preset wins clearly at matched level, you’re done.

When a preset wins, download the WAV, not the MP3: it’s free either way, and your distributor should get the lossless file. Name it with the preset, such as “song-title-clarity.wav”, so you remember which one you chose when you master the next single and want it to match.

Spot when free isn’t enough

Free BandLab isn’t enough when every preset is either too soft or too hard for your song, when you want a specific character (warmer, wider, more vintage) that none of the four gives, or when you don’t want to create an account for a one-off master. In those cases, test a second masterer rather than forcing a preset.

It also isn’t enough when the mix has a real problem. If all four presets make the chorus crunch or the low end boom, no preset fixes it: pull the bass down 1–2 dB or cut 2 dB around 250 Hz in the mix, then master again.

Get a second free option for the tracks BandLab doesn’t suit

Master the same mix free with Loopin: no account, no sign-up, and eight feels — Warm, Punchy, Crisp, Wide, Vintage, Club, Lo-fi and Cinematic — with a loudness-matched Original-vs-Mastered A/B built in. The download is a 16-bit WAV at about −14 LUFS with a −1 dBTP ceiling.

Put the BandLab and Loopin masters side by side at matched loudness and keep whichever suits the song. There’s no reason to be loyal to one masterer across a whole catalogue. For more on BandLab, read our BandLab Mastering review, or try the free online mastering tool on your next track.
