What Is Clipping in Audio?

Clipping is what happens when a waveform is asked to go past a ceiling it cannot pass, so the top gets flattened. Where it happened decides whether you can still do anything about it.
What it actually is
Every digital system has a maximum value. When the signal exceeds it, the peaks are not turned down — they are cut off flat, and those flat tops are new harmonic content that was not in the original sound.
A little of it reads as warmth or aggression, which is why some clipping is deliberate. A lot of it reads as a fizz or a crackle sitting on top of the loudest moments, and that is the version nobody wants.
Where one: the input, while recording
The converter ran out of range. This is the unfixable one — the flat tops are printed in the file and no processing reconstructs what was never captured. Restoration plugins can disguise short instances; they cannot recover a whole chorus.
Prevent it by peaking around −12 dBFS while tracking. A 24-bit recording has so much range that recording quietly costs you nothing, and the advice to record hot is two decades out of date.
Where two: inside the mix
A channel or bus exceeding 0 dBFS internally. Modern DAWs work in floating point, which means the signal survives intact as long as nothing in the chain hard-limits it — so this is usually recoverable simply by turning things down.
The exception is any plugin with a fixed internal ceiling, and analogue emulations in particular. If a plugin sounds harsh, check what is arriving at it before you blame the plugin.
Where three: on playback, after the file is finished
This is the one people miss. A file can measure exactly 0.0 dBFS and still exceed full scale when a converter reconstructs it as sound, or when a lossy encoder re-creates it. The file looks legal and clips anyway.
The tell is distortion that appears on a phone or a Bluetooth speaker and not on your interface. Fix it with a true peak ceiling of −1 dBTP and re-render — turning the finished file down does not help.
How to tell which one you have
Listen to the mix at a matched level with the master bypassed. Distortion present in both was recorded or mixed in. Distortion only in the master is limiting or the ceiling. Distortion only on some devices is the playback case.
Two minutes of that saves an afternoon of processing the wrong stage. If it turns out to be the master, re-master from the unlimited mix rather than treating the finished file.
