Headroom is simply the distance between your loudest peak and the ceiling. The useful question is not what it means but how much to leave, and that answer is different at each stage.
Recording: peak around −12 dBFS
When you are tracking, aim for peaks around −12 dBFS with the loudest moment reaching maybe −6. This is not about tape or warmth — it is that a 24-bit recording has so much dynamic range that recording quietly costs you nothing, while clipping the converter costs you the take.
The old advice to "get as close to 0 as possible" comes from 16-bit and from analogue tape, where the noise floor mattered. It has been wrong for twenty years and it still ruins takes.
Mixing: peak around −6 to −3 dBFS
Hand your mix over peaking around −6 to −3 dBFS, with nothing limiting the mix bus. That gap is where the mastering stage does its work — every EQ move, every bit of compression needs somewhere to go.
A mix already peaking at 0 forces the next stage to turn it down before it can do anything, and if the mix has been limited to get there, the damage is already printed. Preparing the mix properly is mostly this one number.
Mastering: ceiling at −1 dBTP
The finished file should have a true peak ceiling of −1 dBTP. Not sample peak — true peak, which accounts for the fact that a file measuring 0.0 dBFS can exceed full scale when a converter turns it back into sound.
One decibel of headroom in the master costs nothing perceptually because streaming normalisation sets the playback level anyway, and it prevents the distortion that lossy encoders introduce on files pushed to the top. Master with a proper ceiling rather than trusting a sample-peak meter.
What actually happens when you leave none
Three separate things, and they are often mistaken for each other. The converter or plugin clips, producing hard edges. The encoder overshoots on playback, producing distortion that only appears on some devices. And the limiter works harder than it needs to, flattening transients you cannot get back.
The tell for the second one is a master that sounds clean on your interface and gritty on a phone or a Bluetooth speaker. That is inter-sample overshoot, and turning the finished file down does not fix it — you have to re-render with a ceiling.
Headroom is not the same as quiet
A mix peaking at −6 dBFS can still be as loud as one peaking at 0, because perceived loudness comes from the average level, not the peak. The two numbers are only loosely related and confusing them is why people over-limit.
If your mix feels quiet at −6 peak, the fix is balance and arrangement — not turning it up. Turning it up moves both numbers and changes nothing about how big it feels.
