Saturation in Mastering: Warmth Without Volume

Saturation adds harmonics rather than level. That is why a saturated master can feel bigger at the same LUFS — and why too much of it is very hard to undo.
What it does to the signal
It rounds the peaks slightly and generates harmonics above the frequencies already present. Those harmonics sit in ranges your ear is sensitive to, so the record reads as fuller without the meter moving much.
It also reduces peak level slightly, which means a limiter afterwards has less work to do — often 0.5 to 1 dB less for the same loudness.
How much: the drive nobody can hear
On a master, the correct amount is usually the amount you can only detect by bypassing. If you can hear saturation as an effect, it is too much for a full mix — it is being applied to everything at once, including things that should stay clean.
A practical starting point is whatever setting produces about 1–2% total harmonic distortion, or on plugins without a readout, roughly a quarter of the drive range.
Where in the chain
Before the limiter, after your tonal EQ. Saturating before EQ means you shape harmonics you generated rather than the music; saturating after the limiter undoes the ceiling you just set.
If you are also using a clipper, put saturation before it. Two stages of soft distortion in a row compound faster than either does alone.
Type matters less than amount
Tape, tube, transformer and console emulations differ mostly in which harmonics they emphasise — even-order sounds fuller, odd-order sounds edgier. At the small amounts appropriate for a master, the difference is subtle.
Pick one and learn it rather than switching. Knowing exactly what your one saturator does at each setting is worth more than owning six.
How to check you have not overdone it
Bypass and match the level. Saturation raises perceived loudness, so an unmatched comparison always favours it — this is how people end up with a master that sounds impressive for thirty seconds and tiring for three minutes.
Then listen to a cymbal-heavy section and a bass-heavy one separately. Saturation shows up first as grit on cymbals and as a loss of definition in the low end. If either has appeared, back it off. Compare against a clean master of the same file to hear where you are.
