How to Sound Like Olivia Rodrigo: The Vocal Sound, Explained

Start from what her producer and mixers documented

What’s on the record (sourced). Producer Dan Nigro told Universal Audio he puts the 1176 Rev A “bluestripe” plugin on every song and probably every vocal, switching to the Rev E “blackface” only occasionally. On ‘vampire’ (2023), Sound On Sound’s Inside Track describes vocals recorded through an outboard silverface 1176 and then a UAD 1176 in the box, with a Waves Q-series EQ, and a lot of comping to make the vocal build through the first verse and chorus. Serban Ghenea mixed it.

On ‘drivers license’ (2021), mixer Mitch McCarthy walked Sound On Sound through a lead vocal with six inserts, including a Waves CL76, FabFilter Pro-DS and Oeksound Soothe 2 for sibilance and harshness, plus separate hall, plate and “chorus verb” returns and two EchoBoy delays. For GUTS, Nigro told MusicRadar that ‘all-american bitch’ and ‘ballad of a homeschooled girl’ were recorded live with a band. No one has published the settings.

Hear both modes on these songs

‘drivers license’ (2021): verses are close and quiet over piano, with space kept small. The bridge (“red lights, stop signs”) is where it opens up: layered voices, more reverb, far more level. ‘vampire’ (2023) makes the same move over a whole song, from intimate piano ballad to belted rock vocal.

‘good 4 u’ (2021): deadpan, almost spoken verses, then a doubled, shouted pop-punk chorus with grit on it. ‘bad idea right?’ (2023): talk-sung verses, dry and conversational. The lesson: the dry, close voice and the big doubled voice are two different sounds, and the contrast is the hook.

How to sound like Olivia Rodrigo: build two vocal tracks

Put the intimate parts and the loud parts on separate tracks. Intimate track: sing 10–15 cm from the mic, quietly, and keep reverb to a short plate of 0.8–1.2 seconds sent low. Loud track: sing at full voice and record at least two takes for doubles, panned 70–100% left and right under a centred lead. Add saturation to the loud track only, blended at 15–30%.

Automate the reverb sends up 3–6 dB for bridges and final choruses rather than leaving them static. What goes wrong: the belted notes turn harsh at 2–5 kHz and the esses go sharp. That’s why the ‘drivers license’ chain had both a de-esser and a resonance suppressor; use a dynamic cut or resonance suppressor on the loud track, not a static EQ cut that dulls the quiet parts too.

Set up the Olivia Rodrigo vocal chain as a starting point

Lead: high-pass at 80–100 Hz, then an 1176-style FET compressor at 4:1 with a fast release catching 3–6 dB, then a second compressor, or a second 1176-style pass, taking another 2–3 dB, mirroring the two-stage compression described for ‘vampire’. Then a de-esser at 5–8 kHz and a resonance suppressor lightly on the belted sections.

Effects: a short plate for the verses, a longer hall of 2–2.5 seconds for bridges, and an eighth-note slapback delay at low level to thicken the dry verses without making them sound wet. Keep the verse vocal louder than feels comfortable; the intimacy comes from level and closeness, not from reverb.

Skip the Olivia Rodrigo vocal preset and arrange the contrast

An Olivia Rodrigo vocal preset puts one chain on one track. Her songs work because the vocal changes between sections, and that’s arrangement and performance first. A preset on a song sung at one intensity gives you a well-compressed vocal with nothing to switch to.

Skip distortion on the whole vocal and skip huge reverb on the verses. Do write the quiet verse and the loud chorus, sing them differently, and double only the loud parts; how to double-track vocals covers the takes. When both modes are recorded but the switch doesn’t hit, that’s the job Project Jade is being built for.

Mix the switch, then hand off

Order: comp each track, set the intimate chain, set the loud chain, balance the chorus doubles, then automate sends and levels section by section. Play the verse-to-chorus switch in mono; if the chorus doesn’t jump by 2–4 dB of perceived level, turn up the doubles, not the lead. Frequently asked questions

What compressor does Dan Nigro use on Olivia Rodrigo's vocals?

Nigro told Universal Audio he uses the 1176 Rev A plugin on probably every vocal, about 99% of the time, switching to the Rev E occasionally. Settings haven't been published.

What is the Olivia Rodrigo vocal chain?

Documented pieces: on vampire, an outboard 1176 then a UAD 1176 and a Waves Q EQ; on drivers license, a chain including a Waves CL76, FabFilter Pro-DS and Soothe 2 with hall, plate and chorus reverbs and two EchoBoy delays.

How do you mix vocals like Olivia Rodrigo?

Split intimate and loud parts onto two tracks. Keep verses close with a 0.8 to 1.2 second plate, double the loud parts panned 70 to 100%, and automate the reverb up 3 to 6 dB for the bridge.

How do I get a pop punk vocal sound?

Double the chorus, add 15 to 30% parallel saturation, and compress in two stages for 5 to 9 dB total. Use a resonance suppressor rather than a static cut to tame harsh belted notes.

Will an Olivia Rodrigo vocal preset work?

It gives you a usable chain, but the sound depends on switching between a quiet and a loud vocal, which a single preset can't do.
