How to Sound Like Billie Eilish: The Vocal Sound, Explained

Start from what Finneas and Kinelski have said

What's on the record (sourced): Finneas told Mix his bedroom has “a very specific sound, very tight and intimate and closed and quiet” and “I love the way it makes vocals sound.” He said he may have told mixer Rob Kinelski they didn't want any reverb on the debut album, and “we definitely kept some vocals really dry,” though some songs do have reverb. Among the vocal tools he's named: Logic's Vocal Transformer, Pitch Correction and Sample Delay, Antares Harmony Engine and Soundtoys Little AlterBoy.

Kinelski told Billboard the vocal has “a very intimate, hypnotic feeling”: “she's right up in your face, but the emotions of certain words do a 'dance' in the stereo field.” His Sound On Sound breakdown of “bad guy” (2019) counts 21 vocal tracks among 49 audio tracks. Nobody published settings.

Listen for how small and close the voice is

“when the party's over” (2018): a near-whispered lead with layers of harmony swelling behind it and very little obvious room. “bad guy” (2019): a breathy, dry lead over heavy sub bass, with whispered doubles and ad-libs popping out to the sides. “everything i wanted” (2019): soft and intimate throughout. “Happier Than Ever” (2021): starts soft and close, then turns loud and distorted, so the dry, small first half is a choice.

Listen for: almost no audible room, a low noise floor between lines, single words or ad-libs moving left and right, harmonies tucked well under the lead, and pitch or formant effects used on a line as a sound, not as correction.

How to sound like Billie Eilish: record quiet, close and dead

Sing at speaking level about 8–15 cm from the mic with a pop filter, and raise the input gain to match. Deaden the space first: a wardrobe full of clothes or a duvet behind you does more than any plug-in. Then check the silence between lines at full volume. Compression will lift that noise later, so fix it now; recording vocals in a noisy room has the tricks.

Harmonies: record each part two or three times, pan pairs apart, keep them dry and 6–10 dB under the lead. For the “dance”, automate the pan of one word or ad-lib per section rather than widening everything. Try a pitch or formant shifter on a single line as an effect. How to record harmonies covers the stacking.

Build a Billie Eilish vocal chain around dryness

Starting points, not her settings: high-pass at 70–90 Hz, keeping some of the close-mic warmth; a compressor with a medium attack taking 3–6 dB so breaths and quiet words hold up; a de-esser set firmly, because quiet close singing makes S sounds loud relative to the voice; a small lift around 10–12 kHz for air if the take is dull. For space, a very short room at a low level or nothing at all.

What goes wrong: mouth clicks and breaths become huge once compressed, so clean them before mixing. If the vocal vanishes under the sub, don't add low end to the voice; cut 200–300 Hz on the bass so the voice's body has room. Upward compression is often called “the secret”, but no engineer source says so.

Skip the Billie Eilish vocal preset and comp harder

A preset can't make a loud take sound like a whisper; it will just make a loud take dry. It also can't comp. MusicTech reported Billie and Finneas showing David Letterman a vocal built from 87 takes on the Happier Than Ever sessions. That's the real chain: many quiet takes, cut word by word.

The ten-minute version: record the chorus five times, pick the best word from each, and line up the harmonies before you add a single effect. If it still doesn't sit, that balance is what Project Jade is being built to handle.

Frequently asked questions

Does Billie Eilish use reverb on her vocals?

Sparingly. Finneas has said some vocals on the debut album were kept really dry, though a few songs do have reverb. Start with none, then add a short room only if the vocal feels detached.

What is Billie Eilish's vocal chain?

No settings are published. Finneas has named Logic's Vocal Transformer, Pitch Correction and Sample Delay, Antares Harmony Engine and Little AlterBoy among his vocal tools.

Does a Billie Eilish vocal preset work?

Not by itself. The sound is a quiet, close, heavily comped performance in a dead room. A preset can only make your take drier.

How do I get the Billie Eilish whisper sound?

Sing at speaking level 8-15 cm from the mic, raise the gain, deaden the room, compress 3-6 dB and de-ess firmly.

How many vocal tracks are on a Billie Eilish song?

Sound On Sound's breakdown of bad guy counts 21 vocal tracks out of 49 audio tracks.
