How to Master a Gospel Song

Target −12 to −14 LUFS

Gospel sits comfortably between −12 and −14 LUFS integrated. Louder and the build — which is the entire architecture of the genre — stops arriving, because you have spent the range on the verse.

The dynamic contrast between the first verse and the last chorus is the point. Master at a chosen target rather than at maximum, and check the two sections against each other rather than against the meter.

The choir lives in 2–4 kHz and so does everything else

Massed voices pile energy between 2 and 4 kHz, which is also where the lead vocal, the snare and the cymbals sit. A broad high-mid boost applied to the master turns the choir into a wall of sibilance in the final chorus and sounds fine everywhere else.

If the record needs air, use a shelf above 8 kHz rather than a boost at 3 kHz. If the choir feels buried, that is a mix balance and going back is faster than fighting it here.

The organ is the low-end problem

Hammond and pipe organ carry enormous energy below 100 Hz that you may not hear on small speakers but the limiter absolutely does. It is very common for a gospel master to be limiting on organ notes nobody can hear, flattening the drums as a side effect.

Check with a spectrum analyser or by high-passing the master at 40 Hz and listening for what disappears. If nothing audible changes, that energy was costing you headroom for free.

Live recordings: leave the room in

Much gospel is recorded live with congregation noise, and the instinct to clean it up is wrong. The room and the crowd are what make the recording feel like the event, and gating or heavy compression pulls that noise up and down between phrases in a way that sounds far worse than the noise itself.

Accept the noise floor. One decibel of limiting on the peaks and a gentle tonal pass is a complete chain for most live gospel.

Ceiling at −1 dBTP, then check the loudest bar

The ceiling is the same as everywhere. What differs is where to check: the final chorus with full choir, organ and drums together is the densest bar in the genre and the one most likely to breach.

Play that bar on a phone speaker. If it turns to mush, the master is being asked to hold more low-mid energy than it can — and the fix is a 1–2 dB dip around 250 Hz in the mix, not more limiting.
