How to Ask Your Audience for Something

One ask in every seven posts

Six posts that give something — a clip, a story, a demo, a question, a laugh, a reaction — and one that asks. That ratio is roughly where audiences stop noticing the asks as asks.

Count backwards through your last ten posts. If three of them contain a link or a request, that is the reason engagement is falling, not the algorithm.

Ask for one specific action

"Save it" is an action. "Support the release" is a feeling. Specific requests get done because the person knows when they have finished; vague ones get agreed with and forgotten.

One action per ask, too. A post asking people to save, follow, pre-save and share produces none of the four.

Say why it helps, in one clause

"Saving is what keeps it in front of people." Seven words, true, and it converts noticeably better than the same ask without it — because most listeners genuinely do not know which actions matter.

Do not explain further than that. A paragraph about algorithmic mechanics turns a favour into a lecture.

The three asks that cost you people

Asking for money before you have given anything. Asking people to stream repeatedly, which reads as gaming and makes the listening feel like labour. And guilt — "nobody supports independent artists" — which is the fastest way to lose the people who actually do.

Everything on that list works once and never again, and the people it drives away are the engaged ones, because they are the ones paying attention.

Then say what happened

If people did the thing, tell them what it did. "You got it onto three playlists" closes the loop and makes the next ask far more effective, because the last one visibly mattered.

This is the step almost nobody does, and it is the difference between an audience that responds once and one that responds every time.

Frequently asked questions

How often can I ask my audience for something?

About one post in seven. If three of your last ten posts contain a link or a request, that is why engagement is falling.

How should I word a call to action?

One specific action plus one clause explaining why it helps: "saving is what keeps it in front of people". Vague asks get agreed with and forgotten, and multiple asks in one post produce none of them.

What asks lose followers?

Asking for money before giving anything, asking for repeat streams, and guilt-based appeals. All three work once and drive away the engaged people, because they are the ones paying attention.
