How to Write a Caption That Earns a Save

First line: the thing the video did not say

The clip already showed them the music. The caption's first line should add information the video could not carry — where it was written, what it is about, what nearly happened to it.

Repeating the on-screen text is the most common caption and the most wasted. If the line would make sense as the text hook, it does not belong here.

Second line: what happens next

"Out on the 14th." "Full thing in my bio." "Making the second half this week." One clause, telling somebody who now cares what to do about it.

This is the only sales line and it works precisely because it comes after they already like the thing. A pitch in line one is an advert; a pitch in line two is an answer.

Third line: a question you would actually answer

Not "what do you think?" — something specific and easy: "does the second chord bother anyone else?", "verse or chorus?", "what should I call it?" Answerable in three words, with no opinion about your worth attached.

Comments early in a post's life are a signal the platform reads, so this line does mechanical work as well as social work.

Length: three lines, then stop

Platforms truncate after about two lines, and almost nobody taps "more". Anything past line three is written for you, not for the reader.

If you have a longer story worth telling, it is a separate post rather than a caption. Stories perform badly buried under a clip and well as the subject of their own.

The four openings to delete

"New music out now" — an announcement. "So excited to share" — about you. "Link in bio" as the first line — a request before a reason. And any string of hashtags at the top, which pushes the actual words below the fold.

Hashtags go at the very end or in the first comment. Three to five relevant ones, not thirty; thirty reads as reach-seeking and the platform treats it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in a music post caption?

Three lines: something the video could not say, one clause about what happens next, and an easy question. The caption is read after the hook worked, by people already interested.

How long should a caption be?

Three lines. Platforms truncate after about two and almost nobody taps "more", so anything past line three is written for you rather than the reader.

How many hashtags should musicians use?

Three to five relevant ones, at the end or in the first comment. Thirty at the top pushes your actual words below the fold and reads as reach-seeking.
