Why Most Music Ads Waste Money

1. The clip does not hold attention organically

If a clip cannot keep 30% of viewers to three seconds without spend, paying to show it to more people buys the same drop-off at a price. This is the single largest leak and it is invisible because the impressions look fine.

Prerequisite before any spend: one organic post that outperformed your others. Ads amplify; they do not create.

2. Judging it on day one

The first 48 hours are the learning phase and the numbers in it are close to meaningless — cost per click routinely halves between day two and day four. Killing an ad on day one is paying entirely for the guessing period and never reaching the useful part.

Five a day for seven days, one ad set. Shorter runs are not cheaper tests, they are worse ones.

3. Optimising for engagement

Engagement is the cheapest metric to buy and the least connected to anyone listening. It buys likes from people who like things. Traffic optimised for landing page views is the correct objective until you have fifty conversion events.

Check what your campaign is actually optimising for before anything else. It is frequently not what the artist assumed.

4. Geography nobody checked

Clicks are far cheaper in some markets than others, and a campaign left to optimise freely will find them. You end up with a low cost per click, a lot of traffic and a near-zero save rate.

Check the country breakdown on day three, every time. This is where small music budgets most often disappear, and the numbers look good the whole way down.

5. Splitting the budget five ways

Five ad sets at a pound a day each never leave the learning phase because the fifty events needed get divided between them. One ad set with three or four creatives inside it lets the system do the choosing.

The instinct to test many things at once is right and the implementation is wrong: test creatives inside one ad set, not across several.

6. Sending people somewhere slow

A link that opens a web player asking for a login loses most of the people who tapped. Cheap clicks with expensive landing page views is the signature, and it is a destination problem rather than an ad problem.

Test your own link in a private browser window on a phone. Half the fixes on this list cost nothing and this is the cheapest of them.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my music ads not working?

Most often the clip does not hold 30% of viewers to three seconds organically, so paid spend buys the same drop-off at a price. Ads amplify a working clip; they cannot create one.

What objective should a music ad use?

Traffic, optimised for landing page views, until you have around fifty conversion events. Engagement optimisation buys cheap likes from people who like things.

Where does music ad budget usually disappear?

Geography nobody checked. Campaigns find markets where clicks are cheap, producing good-looking traffic with a near-zero save rate. Check the country breakdown on day three.
