Why Does My Recording Sound Bad? Common Causes and Fixes

Most bad-sounding recordings have the same handful of causes — and most of them are fixable before you touch a single plugin. Work through the checklist below before reaching for processing.
The room is the problem
Hard, parallel walls create standing waves and flutter echoes that get recorded with your voice. That boxy, echoey quality is the room — not your mic, not your voice, not your settings. You're too far from the mic
Distance is the enemy of clean vocal recordings. The further you are from the mic, the more room sound gets captured relative to your voice, and the thinner the signal. Stay 6–8 inches from the mic. Closer is warmer; further is thinner and more roomy. Maintain a consistent distance so levels don't jump between lines.
The recording is clipping
Clipping is when the signal hits the maximum level and the top of the waveform gets cut off — resulting in harsh, crackling distortion. It's permanent. No plugin fixes it. Record at a lower level and leave headroom; -12 to -6 dBFS peaks are safe. If you hear any crackle or distortion on loud notes, lower the input gain before your next take.
Background noise is getting captured
Computer fans, HVAC, traffic outside, phone notifications — they all end up in the recording. Kill every noise source you can control before you hit record. A high-pass filter at 80–100 Hz during mixing removes some low-frequency rumble, but constant noise in the midrange (fans, street noise) is much harder to remove after the fact.
There's no mix or master applied
A raw recording sounds flat, quiet and thin compared to released music — not because the recording is bad, but because it hasn't been processed yet. Run through these in order before changing any settings:
- Is the room hard and reflective? → move or add soft surfaces
- Are you more than 10 inches from the mic? → get closer
- Is the waveform clipping? → lower input gain and re-record
- Is there constant background noise? → eliminate the source before recording
- Is the recording raw with no mix? → apply EQ, compression, reverb
- Is it mixed but still quiet? → master it before sharing

Why does my recording sound echoey?
The room is bouncing sound back into the mic. Record in a softer, smaller space — a closet, a corner lined with soft furnishings, or inside a wardrobe. Getting closer to the mic also reduces the room-to-voice ratio.
Why does my voice sound thin on recording?
Usually distance from the mic, a high-passed recording that removed too much low end, or both. Try getting closer to the mic and adding a small boost in the 100–200 Hz range during mixing to bring back some body.
My recording sounds fine in headphones but bad on speakers — why?
