Why Does My Master Lose Punch?

Punch is how far a transient rises above the level around it. Four things reduce that gap, and one measurement tells you how much you have lost.
Measure it before you guess
Take the true peak in dBTP and subtract the integrated LUFS on both the mix and the master. That figure is the crest factor, and the difference between the two numbers is exactly how much punch the mastering removed.
If the mix reads 15 and the master reads 7, you have spent eight decibels of transient contrast. That is not a subjective complaint, it is the measurement.
Cause one: too much limiting
The most common by far. The limiter reduces the peaks and raises everything else, which is the definition of losing punch. Six decibels of gain reduction and the drums stop reading as impacts.
Lower the loudness target. Streaming normalisation takes the extra loudness back anyway, so the trade was never a good one.
Cause two: compressor attack too fast
A compressor with a 1 ms attack grabs the front of every drum hit before it finishes. This rounds transients without necessarily sounding compressed, which is why it goes unnoticed.
Thirty milliseconds or slower on a master. If the drums feel soft with the compressor engaged and fine without it, this is the cause and the fix is the attack knob, not the ratio.
Cause three: the low end is triggering everything
If the kick and bass are the loudest things in the signal, they drive both the compressor and the limiter, so every other element gets ducked by the low end on every beat.
A high-pass on the compressor sidechain around 100 Hz, or a small low-end reduction before the limiter, frees the rest of the record. This is usually worth more than any transient-shaping plugin.
Cause four: it was never there
Check the mix on its own. If the crest factor of the mix is already low, the punch was lost in mixing — over-compressed drum buses, a limiter on the mix bus, samples that were already squashed.
Mastering cannot restore a transient that was not delivered. Master from an unlimited mix with peaks around −6 dBFS and the difference is usually obvious immediately.
