What Sample Rate Should You Master At?

The simple rule: master at the same sample rate you recorded and mixed at. Higher numbers aren’t automatically better, and needless conversion only adds steps. Here’s what actually matters.
What sample rate means
Sample rate is how many times per second the audio is measured — 44.1 kHz means 44,100 samples a second. A higher rate captures higher frequencies and gives processing a little more room to work, but human hearing tops out around 20 kHz, and 44.1 kHz already covers that comfortably. CD and most streaming run at 44.1 kHz; video and many DAWs default to 48 kHz.
The headline point: a higher sample rate doesn’t make your music sound ‘better’ in any obvious way. It mainly affects the very top of the spectrum and the maths inside certain plugins, not the warmth or punch most people imagine.
Master at your project’s native rate
The safest choice is to master at whatever rate you recorded and mixed at. If the project is 44.1 kHz, keep it 44.1 kHz through mastering and export. If it’s 48 kHz, stay at 48 kHz. Sample-rate conversion is a processing step, and doing it unnecessarily — especially up-sampling a 44.1 kHz mix to 96 kHz hoping for magic — adds nothing but an extra conversion.
When conversion is genuinely needed (say a 96 kHz session bound for a 44.1 kHz release), do it once, at the end, with a high-quality converter, and apply a clean export. Distributors and platforms also down-sample as needed, so you don’t have to make a separate file for every target.
When higher rates are worth it
There are real cases for tracking and mixing at 88.2 or 96 kHz: certain pitch-shifting, time-stretching and saturation plugins behave better with more samples to work on, and some engineers prefer the headroom for heavy processing. If you started a project there, master at that rate and convert to the delivery rate at the very end.
But don’t up-convert after the fact. Taking a 44.1 kHz mix to 96 kHz can’t add detail that was never captured — it just interpolates new samples from the existing ones. The benefit of a high rate only exists if you used it from the start.
