Sampling is one of the oldest techniques in hip-hop and electronic music — take a fragment of recorded audio, reshape it, and build a new track around it. The technique is powerful, and the legal side is serious.
What sampling actually is
A sample is any piece of recorded audio taken from an existing source — a drum break, a chord from an old record, a vocal ad-lib, even a single piano note. When a producer chops a James Brown drum loop or lifts four bars of a soul record, that's sampling.
