What peak actually measures

Peak level captures the single highest instantaneous value in a signal, regardless of how brief that moment is. A one-millisecond transient spike registers the same on a peak meter as a sustained loud passage, even though they feel completely different to a listener.

This is why peak alone is a poor proxy for perceived loudness — two tracks can share an identical peak level while sounding dramatically different in how loud they feel overall.

What RMS actually measures

RMS (root mean square) averages signal level over a window of time, giving a reading that correlates much more closely with perceived loudness than a single peak value does. A track with a higher average RMS generally sounds louder overall, even if its peak level is identical to a quieter-feeling track.

This is closer to what LUFS metering builds on, though LUFS adds further psychoacoustic weighting that plain RMS doesn't account for.

Why you need both, not just one

A track can have a safe peak level while still being uncomfortably loud on average (high RMS, low peak-to-average ratio) — or have a reasonable RMS while occasionally spiking into a peak that clips (low RMS, sudden peak). Checking only one of these misses real, different problems.

Modern mastering workflow generally relies on LUFS (loudness) alongside true peak specifically because this combination captures both the perceived-loudness side and the technical-safety side that peak or RMS alone would each miss part of.

The gap between peak and RMS tells you about dynamics

A large gap between a track's peak and its RMS level indicates significant dynamic range — quiet average level with occasional loud spikes. A small gap indicates a heavily compressed or limited signal, where peak and average level are close together.

This gap, sometimes called crest factor, is a useful diagnostic for understanding how much a track has already been compressed, independent of its absolute loudness level.

What this means practically for mastering

Watch LUFS (a refined descendant of RMS thinking) for your overall loudness target, and true peak for your safety ceiling — together, not in isolation. Neither number alone tells you whether a master is actually ready.

If you only have access to basic peak and RMS meters rather than a dedicated LUFS meter, RMS gets you closer to perceived loudness than peak does, but a proper LUFS meter is worth using if it's available.
