Mastering Subscription vs Pay per Track: The Break-Even Number Producers Miss

Start with the pay-per-track price you are beating

At the time of writing (October 2026), Ditto’s mastering page offers a free full-length preview and $5 per mastered track, with no subscription. That is a fair deal for a one-off, and it is the benchmark: $5 per master.

Multiply it out. One master a month is $5 ($60 a year). Three is $15. Ten is $50. Twenty is $100. Pay-per-track stays honest only while your volume stays low.

Divide each plan by your masters per month

eMastered’s help centre lists $39 a month, $19 a month on a 12-month term, or $156 upfront for the year, with the same features on every plan (check the pricing page, as plans can vary by region). Loopin Mastering Unlimited is $10 a month or $59 a year; check the pricing page for your region.

Break-even against $5 a track: Loopin monthly at 2 masters a month, annual at about 1 a month; eMastered $156-a-year at about 3; its $19 plan at 4; its $39 plan at 8. Under those numbers, buy per track. Over them, subscribe. These are the unlimited-plan prices, so the cost per master keeps falling as you add tracks.

Count the free allowance before you pay anyone

Loopin’s online mastering and previews are free and unlimited, and downloads are capped: one per rolling 24 hours with no account, two with a free account. So 10 masters in a month is possible at $0, as long as you spread them over about 5 days with a free account.

BandLab’s mastering is also free with an account, so free is not unique. What changes the maths is the clock, not the price. If you can wait a day between downloads, you may never need a plan.

The number producers miss: masters in the same 24 hours

A client sends an 8-track EP on Friday and wants it Saturday. Pay-per-track costs $40. A free account gets you 2 files. A monthly plan gets you all 8 for the price of one month. That one project decides the question, not the average of your year.

So count your worst week, not your average. If your biggest batch is 2 tracks or fewer, free covers you. If it is 3 or more with a deadline, a plan pays for itself in one job.

Pick monthly first, annual only after three months

Monthly costs $120 a year; the annual Loopin price is $59, which saves about half. But if your work comes in bursts, start monthly, cancel the month the client work dries up and switch to annual only once you have used it three months running.

Whatever you pick, price your own service so it covers the tool. Even at 4 client masters a month, a $10 plan is $2.50 a master. Our how much does mastering cost post has the human-engineer side of the comparison.

Be honest about what the tool does not do

Automatic mastering is a fast first pass. It cannot fix a bad mix and takes no creative direction. For a release a client is paying real money for, hand it to a human engineer and use the automatic version as a preview or reference.

Loopin takes a stereo mixdown and masters one track at a time; there is no batch or album mode. If a subscription is cheaper on paper but you spend an hour managing files, you saved nothing. You can try the free online masterer on a real track before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mastering subscription worth it?

Against $5 per track, a $10 monthly plan wins from the third master a month, and $59 a year wins from about one a month. Below that, pay per track or use a free allowance.

How much does pay per track mastering cost?

At the time of writing (October 2026), Ditto lists $5 per mastered track with a free full-length preview and no subscription. Check the page for current pricing.

What does eMastered cost per month?

Its help centre lists $39 a month, $19 a month on a 12-month term, or $156 upfront for the year. Check the pricing page as plans can vary by region.

Can I master for free instead of paying per track?

Yes. Loopin previews are unlimited, and you can download 1 per rolling 24 hours with no account or 2 with a free account. BandLab mastering is also free with an account.

How do I work out my break-even?

Divide the plan price by the per-track price. A $10 plan divided by $5 is 2, so from 3 masters a month the plan is cheaper. Then check your busiest week against any download caps.
