Headroom is simply the gap between your mix’s loudest peaks and 0 dBFS — the point where digital audio clips. What headroom actually means
In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the ceiling. Any sample that tries to go above it is clipped — flattened — and that flattening is audible distortion. Headroom is the distance between your loudest peak and that ceiling.
If your mix peaks at −6 dB, you have 6 dB of headroom. If it peaks at −0.1 dB, you have almost none. Mastering is a series of processing stages, and every one of them needs somewhere to move the signal without slamming into 0 dBFS.
