Mastering for Vinyl vs Streaming

A master that sounds great on Spotify can cause problems on a record lathe. Vinyl and streaming have different physical limits, so the smartest releases treat them as two related but separate jobs.
Two different sets of rules
Streaming is a digital, loudness-normalised world. Platforms turn everything to roughly −14 LUFS, so the goal is a clean, competitive master that translates across earbuds and phones — loudness is governed by the platform, not the pressing plant.
Vinyl is physical. A cutting head carves a groove into lacquer, and the laws of that process — not a loudness target — decide what works. Harsh highs, out-of-phase bass and brick-walled levels that are fine on streaming can literally make the needle skip on a record.
What vinyl actually needs
Three things matter most for a cuttable master. First, keep low frequencies in mono below roughly 100-150 Hz — stereo bass throws the groove around and can cause skipping. Second, tame harsh sibilance and bright transients; loud high-frequency content (especially de-essed-but-still-spiky vocals and cymbals) is hard to cut cleanly. Third, leave more dynamic range and don’t brick-wall the limiter.
Vinyl also runs quieter by nature, and longer sides cut quieter still. That’s fine: the warmth and dynamics people love about records come partly from not chasing maximum loudness. A good vinyl pre-master gives the cutting engineer room to work, which is the opposite instinct from loud streaming masters.
What streaming needs instead
For streaming, focus shifts to loudness and peaks. Aim for around −14 LUFS integrated with a true-peak ceiling near −1 dBTP so the file survives lossy encoding without clipping. Stereo bass is fine, and you can push a little harder on loudness because nothing is being physically carved.
