Is eMastered Legit? What You Get and What It Costs

Check who’s behind it, then stop worrying about that part

eMastered launched in 2016, founded by engineer Smith Carlson and artist Collin McLoughlin; the launch announcement credits the team’s Grammy-winning work. It has been running for a decade, it has a public help centre, and it isn’t a fly-by-night site that disappears with your card details.

So “legit” is settled. The useful questions are whether its sound suits your track and whether the plan you’re about to buy is the one you think it is.

Use the free preview as your whole test

According to eMastered’s help centre, you can upload a track, let the engine master it, and preview it against your unmastered version free of charge. You only pay to download. That’s a fair deal, and it means you should never subscribe on faith.

Pick your hardest song — the one with a loud chorus and a busy low end — not your easiest. Listen to the chorus, then the quietest verse. If the chorus crunches or the verse gets pumped up to the same level as the chorus, that’s the engine you’d be paying for.

Read the billing term before you click subscribe

At the time of writing (October 2026), eMastered’s help centre says every plan has the same features and only the billing differs, and that the “Yearly (billed monthly)” plan is a 12-month commitment at $19 a month. Third-party roundups list a month-to-month plan at around $39 and a paid-upfront yearly plan at around $156. Confirm the current numbers on eMastered’s pricing page before you pay.

Most of the angry reviews on complaint sites and Trustpilot aren’t about sound quality. They’re from people who chose the billed-monthly yearly plan, assumed they could cancel any month, and found they owed the rest of the year. If you want to be able to walk away, pick the plan that says cancel anytime, even though it costs more per month.

Know what the subscription actually includes

Paid plans unlock downloads in WAV or MP3 and unlimited masters. The help centre also lists mastering options — strength, EQ, compression, stereo width and volume — plus reference mastering, where you upload a song you like and the engine matches toward it. Subscriptions also bundle extras such as stem separation and distribution.

That bundle is good value if you release often and want the controls. It’s poor value if you finish two songs a year: you’d be paying a yearly commitment for a handful of downloads.

Compare it against a free master before you decide

Take the same mix and master it free online with Loopin: no account, no sign-up, and you can download the WAV straight away. Level-match the two results by ear — the louder one always sounds “better” for the first ten seconds — and listen to the snare, the vocal and the bass on a phone speaker.

If eMastered’s version is clearly better on your hardest song, it’s worth paying for. If you can’t tell them apart with the levels matched, keep your money and use the free masterer for this release. Our free eMastered alternatives post covers the other options.

Frequently asked questions

Is eMastered a scam?

No. It's a real mastering service that has operated since 2016 and lets you preview masters free. Most complaints are about subscription commitments, not about being charged for nothing.

Can I use eMastered for free?

You can upload, master and preview free, and compare against your original. Downloading the master requires a paid plan at the time of writing (October 2026).

How much does eMastered cost?

At the time of writing, eMastered's help centre lists a 12-month plan billed at $19 a month; third-party roundups list about $39 month-to-month and about $156 paid yearly. Check the pricing page for current numbers.

Can I cancel eMastered anytime?

Only on the plan sold as cancel-anytime. The yearly plan billed monthly is a 12-month commitment, which is the source of most billing complaints. Read the plan name carefully before paying.

Is eMastered better than free mastering?

Sometimes. It has more controls and reference mastering. Test by level-matching its preview against a free master of the same mix; if you can't hear a clear difference, the free one is enough.

Who founded eMastered?
