How to Sound Like Playboi Carti: The Vocal Sound, Explained
Published · by Loopin
How to sound like Playboi Carti is mostly a voice you perform, not a plug-in you buy: the high baby voice, the hoarse rasp, the ad-libs everywhere. No engineer has published his chain, so build it from what's audible and practise the delivery first.
Accept there's no published chain, and work from the records
What's on the record: we found no engineer interview describing how Playboi Carti's vocals are recorded or processed on Die Lit (2018), Whole Lotta Red (2020) or Music (2025). No chain, no settings, no confirmation of whether the baby voice is pitch-shifted. Pages that say otherwise are guessing.
What critics describe is delivery. Hyperallergic's review of Whole Lotta Red notes the high-pitched “baby voice” alongside newer modes, most strikingly a hoarse rasp, as when the opener “Rockstar Made” finds him croaking its hook. That's the useful starting point: several voices, chosen per song.
Listen to how the voice changes from song to song
“Magnolia” (2017): a relaxed, mid-register flow over a bright, spacious beat, with ad-libs filling every gap. “Rockstar Made” (2020): the rasp, strained and shouted, sitting inside a distorted beat rather than on top. “Stop Breathing” (2020): aggressive, clipped phrases over a blown-out, synth-heavy track. Across the Whole Lotta Red era, the high baby voice shows up on tracks like “Teen X”.
Listen for: how far the voice changes character between songs, ad-libs almost as loud as the lead, a lead vocal sitting lower in the beat than a typical rap mix, and grit that sounds like part of the voice rather than an effect on top.
How to sound like Playboi Carti: change the voice before the chain
Baby voice: raise the pitch of your speaking voice, push it slightly into your nose, round the vowels and shorten the words. Record five passes of one bar until it sounds natural rather than like an impression. Rasp: shout from the chest at a lower pitch rather than squeezing the throat, and stop if it hurts; distortion can add grit later without the strain.
If you can't get there vocally, a pitch shifter is a workaround, not a documented technique: try +2 to +4 semitones with formants raised slightly for a younger tone, or −2 to −4 with formants lowered for a darker one. Past four semitones it sounds like a chipmunk or a robot. Record ad-libs on a separate track in their own voice.
Set up a Playboi Carti vocal chain as a starting point
Our numbers, not his: high-pass at 100–150 Hz; light pitch correction at a medium retune; a fast compressor taking 6–10 dB so every syllable is the same level; saturation or distortion, mixed in until the voice crunches on loud words; a short room or slapback (60–120 ms) to put it inside the beat. Ad-libs: high-pass higher, pan 40–80%, more delay.
What goes wrong: heavy compression plus distortion makes S sounds and breaths explode, so de-ess before the distortion. If the vocal sounds pasted on top, turn it down 1–2 dB and add a little of the room; rage mixes sit the voice into the beat. If a pitch-shifted voice sounds cheap, the formant setting is usually the culprit.
Skip the Playboi Carti vocal preset and practise the delivery
A preset can distort and compress, but it can't change how you pronounce a word, and that's most of the baby voice. It also can't choose which voice suits which beat. Load a “Carti preset” on a normal rap take and you get a normal rap take with distortion.
The ten-minute drill: take one bar, say it three ways (baby voice, normal, rasp) and keep the one that fits the beat. If mixing the lead, ad-libs and a distorted beat so nothing fights is the hard part, that's the stage Project Jade is being built for.

Frequently asked questions
Is Playboi Carti's baby voice pitch-shifted?
Nobody involved has said so publicly. It sounds like a performed delivery. If you use a shifter to approximate it, stay within +2 to +4 semitones and adjust formants.
What is Playboi Carti's vocal chain?
Not published. A starting point: high-pass at 100-150 Hz, light tuning, a fast compressor taking 6-10 dB, de-esser, then distortion and a short room.
Does a Playboi Carti vocal preset work?
Only for the distortion and compression. The baby voice and rasp are delivery, which no preset can add.
How do I do the Carti rasp without hurting my voice?
Use a lower pitch from the chest instead of squeezing your throat, keep takes short, and stop if it hurts. Add distortion in the mix for extra grit.
How loud should ad-libs be in a Carti-style mix?
Close to the lead, often only 2-4 dB under it, panned 40-80% so they don't mask the main words.
