How to Set Up a Meta Ad for a Song
Published · updated · by Loopin
A first music ad fails for settings reasons, not creative reasons. Here are the exact ones to use and the three defaults that quietly spend your budget on nothing.
Objective: traffic, not engagement
Choose Traffic and optimise for landing page views. Engagement optimisation buys you likes from people who like things — it is the cheapest metric to buy and the least connected to anyone listening.
If you have a pixel on your link page and more than about fifty events on it, switch to Conversions later. Before that, the algorithm has nothing to learn from and Conversions will just spend slowly and badly.
Audience: interests, and keep it above 500,000
Target three to five artists who sound like you, not the biggest name in your genre. Fans of an artist with two million monthly listeners are a usable audience; fans of one with eighty million are everybody.
Keep the resulting audience above roughly 500,000 people. Narrower than that and delivery gets expensive because the system runs out of room to optimise. Set age to a 20-year band, not 18–65, and leave placements on Advantage+ — hand-picking placements at this budget starves the learning phase.
Budget: the number that actually decides this
Five dollars a day for seven days, minimum. Not fifty dollars for one day. The system needs roughly 50 conversion events to leave the learning phase, and a one-day burst never gets there, which is why short high-budget tests produce garbage numbers.
Run one ad set, not five. Splitting a small budget across ad sets divides the events between them and none of them learn. One ad set, three to four creatives inside it, and let the system pick.
Creative: three clips, no still images
Use the clips you already posted organically, and specifically the ones that performed. Organic performance is free ad testing, and a clip that held attention without paid support will hold it with paid support.
Vertical, sound on by default, text hook on frame one. No still image with a play button — it looks like an ad, and looking like an ad is the most expensive thing a music ad can do.
The three defaults to change, and when to kill it
Turn off Advantage+ audience expansion for the first run — you want to know whether your chosen interests work before the system broadens them. Turn off automatic music and text overlays. And set the campaign to standard delivery, not accelerated, so the budget spreads across the day.
Judge it on cost per landing page view, not on reach or CPM. Under about 20 cents is working. Over 60 cents, kill it after day three and change the creative — never the targeting first, because creative is the variable with the widest range.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend on my first music ad?
Five dollars a day for at least seven days, in a single ad set. The system needs around 50 events to leave the learning phase, so a short high-budget burst produces unusable numbers no matter how much you spend.
What objective should I use for a music ad?
Traffic, optimised for landing page views. Engagement optimisation buys cheap likes from people who like things, which does not correlate with anyone actually listening.
What is a good cost per click for music ads?
Judge cost per landing page view rather than per click. Under about 20 cents is working, over 60 cents is not — and the first thing to change is the creative, not the targeting.
