How to Mix Hyperpop Vocals

Pitch and formant first, before anything else

Shift the vocal up 3–7 semitones if you want the chipmunk-bright lead, and move the formant separately. Formant up with pitch gives the cartoon voice; formant held at 0 or slightly down with pitch up keeps it human but young. Pitch shifting before the tuner matters, because the tuner then locks the shifted notes to the scale instead of fighting artefacts from a shifter placed after it.

Set the scale from the beat (the key and BPM finder gives it to you in seconds). Hyperpop often jumps keys or uses chromatic runs, so if the tuner keeps landing on wrong notes in one section, switch to a chromatic scale for that section only.

Tune at 0 ms and stop apologising for it

Retune speed 0 ms, humanise off, flex-tune off. The stepped, synthetic pitch is the sound. Where the singer slides between notes, the tuner will create a warble; either re-sing the slide in steps or cut the tail of the note so it lands clean. Cloud-rap relatives of the style, covered on the Bladee page, use the same hard tuning with a much softer delivery.

Double the tuned vocal and pitch the copy an octave up (formant corrected) at −12 to −18 dB under the lead. That adds sparkle without a second performance.

Compress hard, then distort in parallel

Hyperpop vocals are flat in dynamics: 8–12 dB of gain reduction across two stages (a fast FET-style at 6:1, then a limiter or clipper catching another 2–3 dB) is normal. Then send to a parallel bus with distortion, bitcrushing or amp simulation, and blend it in at 20–50%. Keeping the clean lead underneath means the words survive the destruction.

High-pass the distortion bus at 300–500 Hz. Low-mid distortion turns into mud fast, and the grit you actually hear lives above 1 kHz.

Spend your effort on harshness

Pitched-up, compressed, distorted vocals pile energy into 2–5 kHz and 7–10 kHz. Put a dynamic EQ after everything: a band at 3–4 kHz cutting up to 4 dB when it spikes, and a de-esser at 7–9 kHz. Check at low volume on earbuds; if it hurts after 30 seconds, it will hurt everyone else too.

Brightness is part of the style, so add air (a 3 dB shelf at 12 kHz) only after the dynamic cuts. Brightness and harshness live next to each other, and the order decides which one you get.

Make the effects move

Static effects sound like a preset. Automate: a chorus or flanger that opens only on the pre-chorus, a stutter on the last word before a drop, a formant sweep on a single line, a filter that closes the vocal down to 1 kHz for a bar and then snaps open. Stereo width can be huge here, with chorus spread wide on doubles, but keep the main lead in the centre so it survives on a phone speaker.

Delays are short and synced (sixteenth or eighth notes) with high feedback on throws only. Long reverbs are rare; a bright, short plate at 0.8–1.2 s keeps the vocal glossy without washing out the beat.

Keep the chaos intentional

The difference between hyperpop and a broken mix is intention; each effect should arrive for a reason and leave when the section ends. The trap vocals page covers the rage-style distortion that overlaps with the heavier end. Artist names here describe styles only; Loopin isn't affiliated with any of them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pitch up vocals for hyperpop?

Shift 3–7 semitones before the tuner. Move the formant up with it for a cartoon voice, or keep the formant at 0 for a younger but still human tone.

What Auto-Tune settings for hyperpop?

Retune speed 0 ms, humanise off, correct key and scale. Switch to chromatic for sections with runs or key changes.

How do you distort vocals without losing the words?

Distort a parallel copy, high-pass it at 300–500 Hz, and blend it at 20–50% under the clean lead.

Why do my hyperpop vocals hurt to listen to?

Too much energy at 2–5 kHz and 7–10 kHz. Use a dynamic EQ cutting up to 4 dB around 3–4 kHz and a de-esser at 7–9 kHz, then add air after.

How much compression on hyperpop vocals?

8–12 dB total: a fast compressor at 6:1 plus a clipper or limiter taking another 2–3 dB.
