How to EQ Vocals for Clarity: Plain-Language Guide

EQ doesn't add quality — it removes what's obscuring it. Start by cutting the frequencies that are hurting the vocal, and you'll often find the clarity you wanted was already there.
High-pass filter: clear the bottom
Set a high-pass filter at 80–100 Hz on every vocal track. Everything below that point is low-end rumble — breath noise, mic handling, HVAC — that competes with the kick and bass without contributing anything to the vocal sound. This is the first EQ move on any vocal, no exceptions.
Cut the mud: 200–400 Hz
If the vocal sounds boxy, honky or like it's coming from inside a cardboard tube, the culprit is usually a buildup between 200 and 400 Hz. Sweep a narrow cut through this range while the mix is playing — you'll hear the boxy quality exaggerate at the problem frequency. Cut 3–5 dB there. The presence range: 2–5 kHz
Intelligibility — the sense that you can hear every word clearly — lives in the 2–5 kHz range. A gentle boost of 1–3 dB around 3–4 kHz brings the consonants forward without making the vocal harsh. Go easy: this range is also where sibilance (the 's' and 'sh' sounds) lives, and boosting too much creates harshness you'll need a de-esser to fix.
Air: 10 kHz and above
A gentle high-shelf boost around 10–12 kHz adds 'air' — an open, airy quality that makes the vocal sound less closed in. Half a dB to 2 dB is enough. This is optional and genre-dependent — lo-fi and warmer styles often skip it deliberately.
EQ in context, not in solo
Soloing the vocal to EQ is useful for finding problems, but balance decisions need to be made with the full track playing.
