How to Edit a Music Clip in Under 10 Minutes

Editing takes an hour because it has no fixed order. Here is one — seven steps, always the same, and three things to stop doing entirely.
Audio first, always
Drop the finished master in before you touch the video. Everything downstream — where to cut, how long the clip is, where the text lands — is decided by the music, and editing picture first means redoing all of it.
If you filmed a performance, sync it now using the clap and forget about it. Sync problems discovered at step six cost you the whole edit.
Trim to bars, not to seconds
Set the clip to a whole number of bars so it loops without a click. At 120 BPM, four bars is 8 seconds; at 90 BPM it is about 10.7. Trim the end to the beat immediately before the one you started on and the loop becomes invisible.
This one step does more for watch time than any effect, because a clean loop gets counted twice and a clicky one gets swiped.
Cut the first half second
Whatever you filmed, delete the first half second. It is almost always you settling — reaching, breathing in, finding your position — and it is a sixth of the window you are fighting for.
Then check that something moves in the remaining first second. If not, move the cut later until it does.
Text on, at 0:00, top third
One line, under seven words, hard cut in with no animation. Top third of the frame so the platform's own interface does not cover it. This is the step people spend twenty minutes on and it should take ninety seconds.
Write the line before you open the editor. Choosing the words inside the editing app is what turns a ten-minute job into an hour.
Then stop: the three steps to skip
Skip transitions — nobody has ever stayed for a transition. Skip colour grading; a phone in daylight already looks fine and grading a vertical clip that will be re-encoded twice is invisible. Skip captions on a music clip with no speech.
Export at the highest quality the app offers, vertical, and post. The last two minutes are the export bar, and the edit itself should be under eight.
