Free Mastering With a Watermark? 5 Trial Traps Producers Fall For

Trap 1: the preview is not the file

Plenty of tools let you hear a full master for free and charge to take it home. That is a fair model, and at the time of writing (October 2026) Ditto’s support page describes exactly that: preview the full track free, then pay $5 to download the final master. Nothing wrong with it, as long as you know the price before you fall for the preview.

The trap is the beat you promised a client by tonight. If the preview sounds great at 9pm and the paywall appears at 9:05, you are buying under deadline. Find the download price first, then upload.

Do the same check on every tool you try, and keep a note of the price, the file type you actually get and the date you looked. Prices and trial terms change, so a note from March is not evidence in October.

Trap 2: the free file carries a mark

Some free tiers do hand you a download, but with a spoken tag, a noise burst or a reduced-quality file baked in. Those files are fine for judging a master and useless for selling a beat. A watermark cannot be removed afterwards, so the only fix is another download.

Check before you commit: download one file, drop it in your DAW, and listen to the full length with the volume up. Look at the waveform for a regular blip. Ten minutes of checking beats re-doing a release.

Preview-only tools are not the villain here: if a tool is honest that the preview is for judging and the paid file is the product, plan for that. The trap is the tool that is vague about it.

Trap 3: the trial that rolls into a plan

A trial that wants a card is a subscription with a delay. Read three lines before you enter it: the length of the trial, the price it converts to, and whether that plan is monthly, or a 12-month term billed monthly. Those are very different commitments.

Put the cancel date in your phone calendar the minute you sign up, a day earlier than the trial ends. If cancelling needs an email rather than a button, assume you will forget.

Trap 4: free to master, capped to download

“Free” and “unlimited” are not the same word. With free online mastering on Loopin, mastering, previews and loudness-matched A/B are unlimited, but downloads are capped: one per rolling 24 hours with no account, two with a free account. If you finish five beats on a Friday, that cap matters.

BandLab’s mastering is also free, so free is not unique to us. Before you pick a tool for volume, write down the download limit, not just the price. If the number is lower than your week, plan for it.

Trap 5: the louder preview wins

The unwatermarked preview that beats your mix often just plays louder. Louder sounds bigger for the first ten seconds and flatter by the end of the chorus. Judge only at matched loudness, which is what Loopin’s A/B does for its own master; for another tool, drop its preview until the meters read the same.

Then listen to the loudest 20 seconds. If the snare lost its front edge or the 808 got smaller, the “better” master is the over-limited one. Our guide to A/B-ing a master properly has the steps.

A quick way to match: play your mix, note where the meter peaks and where it sits on average, then bring the other file down until the loud chorus reads the same. Do not trust your ears in the first five seconds; trust them after a minute of switching back and forth.

The ten-minute test before you upload

One mix, two tools. Master it in each, download one file from each, and check four things: no tag or blip in the full-length file, the format you actually need, loudness matched by ear and meter, and the download rule written down. Total time: about ten minutes.

Want the quick version? Master the track free first, then compare. Automatic mastering cannot rescue a bad mix, and it takes no direction, so treat any result as a strong first pass and keep your own ears as the final check.

Keep the winning file, the tool name and the date in one folder, so when a client asks which version they approved you can answer in ten seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Does free online mastering add a watermark?

It depends on the tool. Some previews are unrestricted but paid to download, some free downloads carry a tag or lower-quality file. Download one file and listen to the full length before you sell it.

Is Ditto mastering free?

At the time of writing (October 2026), Ditto lets you preview the full track free and charges $5 to download the master. Check its page for the current price.

Is there free mastering with no watermark?

Yes. Loopin and BandLab both offer free mastering. Loopin caps free downloads at 1 per rolling 24 hours with no account and 2 with a free account.

Can I sell a beat mastered with a free trial?

Only if the file you download is the clean one and the tool's terms allow it. Read the terms for commercial use and confirm the file has no tag.

How do I stop a free trial charging me?

Set a calendar reminder one day before the trial ends, note the plan it converts to, and cancel in the account settings. Screenshot the confirmation.
