Hybrid Mastering Workflow: Automatic Master First, Your Ears Second
Published · by Loopin
Let an automatic master do the first pass, then spend your time where ears matter: the A/B, the problems and the final check. This is the order that saves the hour.
Step 1: master the stereo mix first, untouched
Bounce the mix with peaks around −6 dBFS and no limiter on the master bus. Run it through the free masterer, pick the feel that fits (Punchy, Warm, Crisp, Wide, Vintage, Club, Lo-fi or Cinematic) and listen once, start to finish.
This gives you a loud, consistent reference in minutes. You are not done; you now know what “good enough” sounds like for this track.
Name the file clearly (track_v1_auto) so you never confuse the first pass with the delivered master later in the week.
Step 2: A/B at matched loudness
Use the loudness-matched Original vs Mastered switch and listen to the loudest 20 seconds. Is the vocal clearer or just louder? Did the kick lose its attack? Louder alone is not better.
Write down one sentence of problems, such as “low end muddy” or “hi-hats harsh”. That sentence is your to-do list.
Try two feels and compare them against each other, not just against the original. Often the second feel is the better fit and you find out in thirty seconds.
Step 3: fix problems in the mix, not the master
Most issues belong in the mix. A 1–2 dB cut around 250 Hz clears mud; a small cut at 3–5 kHz tames harshness. Re-bounce and re-run; previews are unlimited, so iterating costs nothing but time.
If the master pumps or crunches, the culprit is usually a loud, peaky element. See why your master pumps before you reach for more processing.
Limit yourself to one or two fixes per round. Changing five things makes it impossible to hear which one helped.
Step 4: use your ears on the last 5%
Now do what an automatic tool cannot: decide. Is the hook big enough? Does the track match the rest of the EP? Automatic mastering takes no creative direction, so this is where your judgment is the product.
If you want a human touch, take the WAV into your DAW for a gentle final EQ or a level trim. Keep the ceiling at −1 dBTP.
For a batch of tracks, set a time cap per song, such as 15 minutes, and accept good over perfect. Consistency across the EP matters more than a perfect single track.
Step 5: check on a second system, then deliver
Phone speaker, earbuds, car. If it holds up on all three, ship it. If one fails, go back to Step 3, not Step 1.
For clients, deliver the hybrid result and keep the first-pass version as a reference. If a mix has bigger problems than your ears can solve, hand it to a human engineer. Our AI vs engineer post helps decide when.
Write the order on a sticky note: auto pass, matched A/B, fix mix, ears, three systems. Repeat for each track and your hybrid workflow becomes a habit.
Where the time goes in a ten-track week
Ten tracks at roughly 15 minutes each is two and a half hours, against a full day of doing every pass by hand. The saving comes from the first pass and the matched A/B, which are minutes, not from skipping the listening that matters.
Be careful with batches. Loopin takes one stereo mixdown at a time with no stems and no album mode, so keep the same feel across a client’s EP and compare each track with the one before it. Consistency across a record is part of your judgement, so keep that final call. When you are ready to start, master your next mix free and run the five steps on it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hybrid mastering workflow?
Use an automatic master as a fast first pass and reference, then apply your own ears, mix fixes and checks. It saves time without giving up the final decision.
Is automatic mastering good enough for clients?
As a first pass, preview or reference, yes. It cannot fix a bad mix or take creative direction, so apply your own ears before delivery.
How long does the hybrid workflow take?
A first-pass master takes minutes. Allow another ten minutes for the matched A/B and a check on a second system.
What should I fix in the mix instead?
Mud around 250 Hz, harshness around 3 to 5 kHz and any peaky element that makes the master pump. Fix, re-bounce and re-run.
How many downloads can I get free?
Previews are unlimited, but downloads on Loopin's free tier are capped at 1 per rolling 24 hours with no account and 2 with a free account.
