EQ in Mastering: Small Moves, Big Difference

Mixing EQ fixes instruments. Mastering EQ shapes a finished record — and because every move hits everything at once, the useful range is much smaller than most people expect.
The scale is different
In a mix you might cut 6 dB out of a guitar to make room for a vocal. In mastering, a 6 dB move is enormous — it is not a correction, it is a rebuild. Typical mastering EQ moves are between half a decibel and two decibels.
The reason is coverage. A 1 dB boost at 8 kHz lifts the hi-hats, the vocal sibilance, the guitar pick noise and the room tone simultaneously. What reads as a modest tweak on one instrument becomes a broad tonal shift on a finished mix.
Cut before you boost
Subtractive moves tend to sound more natural because you are removing something that was in the way rather than adding energy that was never there. If a mix feels dull, try cutting the low mids before reaching for a high shelf — very often the top was fine and the mud was covering it.
This also protects your headroom. Every boost eats into the room the limiter has to work with; every cut gives some back. A master built mostly from cuts usually needs less limiting to reach the same loudness.
Wide Q for tone, narrow Q for problems
Broad, gentle curves — a Q around 0.7 to 1.0 — sound like tone. They shift the character of the record without drawing attention to a frequency. Use these for the overall balance: a touch more air, slightly less low mid, a gentle tilt.
Narrow curves are for problems: a resonant note ringing in a room, a harsh spike on a snare, a boxy build-up around 300 Hz. Sweep with a narrow boost to find the offender, then invert it to a cut and widen it slightly. If the cut needs to be deeper than about 3 dB, that is a mix problem, not a mastering one.
The regions worth knowing
Below 30 Hz is usually rumble you cannot hear but the limiter can. 60–120 Hz is weight and kick. Around 200–400 Hz is where mud and boxiness live and where most masters benefit from a small cut. The 1–2 kHz region carries body and can turn honky if pushed.
From 2 to 5 kHz is presence and also harshness — the region that makes a record cut through and the region that makes it tiring. Above 10 kHz is air. A half-decibel shelf up there often does more for perceived quality than anything else on the chain.
When to send it back instead
The rule of thumb has survived because it is right: if you need more than about 3 dB of corrective EQ to fix something, the fix belongs in the mix. Mastering EQ moves the whole record, so a big correction for one instrument damages everything else to fix one thing.
It is not a failure to go back. A five-minute change to a mix bus almost always beats an aggressive mastering move, and the finished record will sound bigger for it.
