Why Does My Master Sound Muddy?

Mud is almost always energy piled up between 200 and 400 Hz. Finding which instruments put it there takes about two minutes and is faster than any mastering move.
Confirm the band before cutting anything
Sweep a narrow boost of about 6 dB slowly from 150 to 500 Hz. The frequency where the mix gets noticeably worse is the problem, and it is usually somewhere between 200 and 400.
Note the exact frequency. Cutting broadly across the whole region is what produces the thin master problem instead, and thin is harder to fix than muddy.
Source one: too many instruments with body
Guitars, keys, pads and vocal all carry energy around 250 Hz. Individually each sounds right; together they sum into a wall. This is an arrangement problem more than a mixing one.
The fix is to pick one instrument to own that range and dip the others 1–2 dB there. Not all of them — the one that carries the emotional weight of the section keeps it.
Source two: room reflections in the recording
Small untreated rooms build up energy around 150–300 Hz, and if that is printed into a vocal or acoustic guitar take, mastering can only reduce it along with everything else at that frequency.
A narrow cut at the room's resonant frequency on that channel is far better than a broad cut on the master. Find it by soloing the track and sweeping.
Source three: over-limiting
Heavy limiting raises the average level of everything, which brings up low-mid content that was previously sitting below the surface. A master can be muddy purely because it is loud.
The tell is that it gets worse in the dense sections and clears in the sparse ones. Lower the target by 2 dB and listen again before reaching for EQ.

Do not high-pass the master. Everything below 100 Hz is weight, not mud, and removing it makes a record thin and small without touching the actual problem.
And do not cut 250 Hz on the master to fix a mix issue. A 1–1.5 dB narrow dip on the master is a polish; more than that means going back. Master from a corrected mix rather than treating the symptom.
